The Best And Worst Ways To Train Your Cat

Sometimes cats engage in behaviors that we the owners don’t appreciate – but the most common mistake we make is to punish them.

According to Adi Hovav, senior feline behavior counselor at the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), “Cats don’t respond well to punishment; it can make the behavior worse and can also cause a cat to become stressed or scared of you.” So what can we do? This video by Jackson Galaxy provides tips on how to correct your cat’s undesirable behaviors the best way possible.

One way to avoid any offending behaviors is we must give our cats the opportunity to act like cats! For example, if your kitty likes scratching your furniture, you should provide them with areas where they are allowed to scratch. If your cat acts aggressive, chances are she does not have enough toys to keep her entertained.

We should also realize that what we consider as a negative response is a positive one in a cat’s perspective. For instance, when they are being shouted at, you are giving them attention and in their mind, this is still attention. Instead, don’t talk to them and walk away. Soon they will eventually avoid doing the things which cause you to give them the cold shoulder.
