Cat Breeds 101: Australian Mist – Image To Repin / Share

The Australian Mist, formerly known as the Spotted Mist, is a relatively new cat breed which started out in Australia in 1976. Dr. Truda Straede of Nintu Cattery is the person who developed the breed because she wanted to breed an Australian cat with the characteristics of the Burmese and Abyssinian. The Burmese were used for their laid back nature and the Abyssinians for their spots and domestics. [1] Their coat is their most distinctive feature; it is short, single layered and does not need much maintenance. The pattern is of delicate spots or marbled swirls against a misty background.
Australian Mists are short-haired, medium-sized cats with a round head and large, expressive eyes. They like to be handled and are not inclined to scratch. They have a life expectancy of 15 to 18 years. [2] They are known to be laid back, even-tempered and friendly cats that are totally comfortable around people. They make great pets for families with children and tolerant of a lively and noisy household. They bond strongly with their family and likes to be the center of attention – however they may experience separation anxiety.
Generally, Australian Mists can live peacefully and comfortably alongside other pets including cat-friendly dogs. Due to their mixed breed ancestry, Australian Mists are considered to be robust and healthy cats that are not particularly prone to any recurrent or significant health problems. [3]
Mists were developed as indoor cats but they do need a degree of activity inside the house. They love to interact from a safe vantage point with the garden and birds so making a safe outdoor enclosure would be very helpful. They can also be trained to walk on a leash but it is advised to not let them roam on their own outside. [4]
